Having a lot of clothes and accessories can be great fun when getting ready for dinner or a night out with friends; however, the downside comes from the difficulty of keeping everything neat and tidy. Clothes are one of the hardest things to keep organized since they are worn, washed, and put away again in a continual cycle that often feels like it gets in the way of proper storage. Here are some useful tips to help you start the process of organizing your wardrobe and keeping it tidy for longer.
Get Rid of Unwanted Items
First of all, take everything out of your wardrobe and anywhere else you might store clothes. Create separate piles for clothes you definitely want to keep, clothes you are unsure about keeping, and clothes you want to get rid of. This might take some time, so don’t rush yourself. You don’t want to accidentally throw out something you love to wear. Don’t feel guilty about putting certain items in the ‘get rid of’ pile, such as sentimental pieces, gifts, and clothes you have fond memories of. You can take photos of these and give them to a new home rather than have them take up valuable space in your closet. Here are some ways you can send your clothes elsewhere without simply discarding them:
- Sell your clothes at a yard sale or online. There are plenty of websites where you can find buyers for good-quality secondhand clothes. Make sure to accurately describe the size and condition of each piece and include clear photographs to help potential buyers.
- Donate unwanted clothes to thrift shops and homeless shelters where they can find new owners or ask your friends and family if they want anything.
- Up-cycle the fabric and transform it into something new. If you are good at sewing, you could turn an old piece of clothing into something unique and special to you.
Create Dedicated Sections
Once you have distilled your closet down to only items that you want to keep, you can start choosing where each type of item will be stored. This will depend on the size, layout, and construction of your closet. Whatever storage you have, whether that’s a single clothes rail or a set of drawers that has been lying on your patio, try to keep different categories of items in their own place. For example, keep your women’s cowboy boots with your sneakers and heels; put your jackets, coats, and other outerwear in the same area; and store your warm clothing in one place, ready for the colder weather. Having these sections makes it quicker to grab items and put together an outfit. When you know where your shirts are kept, it’s easier to find and choose the one you want to wear that day.
Maintain a Tidy Habit
Once you have organized your wardrobe, it can be more of a challenge to maintain it. Work on developing good habits that make it easier to stay tidy than let the mess build up again.
Enjoy the satisfaction of an efficient and organized wardrobe for as long as possible by tending to it regularly.
