Not only do plants add a touch of nature to your home, but they can also help to purify the air, boost your mood and even improve your sleep. If you’re not the green-fingered type, worry not, there are plenty of low maintenance plant options (e.g. succulents) that even the least accomplished gardener can use to introduce some green into your life.

1. Fill your shelves with house plants

Whether you choose to go for a cascading effect with hanging plants or opt for a more curated look with small pots, there are plenty of ways to style your shelves with plants. You can either add small plants to existing shelves (dot them in amongst ornaments, books or picture frames) or, for a really spectacular look, add a new shelf just for your plants… Spider plants in particular look magnificent when spilling over the edge of a shelf.
2. Layer plants at different heights
Create an eye-catching display by layering plants at different heights. Not only does this give your plants a chance to show off their different shapes and sizes, but it also creates an interesting visual effect. For most house plants this requires a slightly deeper shelf, but you can also get the same effect by using multiple smaller plants of increasing height.
3. Place plants on the windowsill
Window Sills are the perfect place to show off your house plants. Not only do they get plenty of light, but they’re also a great way to add some greenery to your home without taking up too much space. You can change the type of plant to suit the windowsill’s room. For example, in the kitchen you could have several pots with different herbs used in cooking while in the bathroom you could create a more luscious look by using ferns or other humidity loving plants.
4. Decorate with indoor trees to create a focal point
If you’re looking for a way to really make a statement, then why not try decorating with an indoor tree? Not only will it create a focal point in your room, but it’s also a great way to add some height and drama to your décor. The most obvious consideration with growing a tree indoors is the size and weight of the pot. If you have wooden floors, be sure to check that the floor is strong enough to handle the weight of the pot when filled with soil. If in doubt, place it in the corner, as generally the floor is strongest in the corner. If you’re not sure whether your room would suit a large tree, you could always try a bonsai or other small tree variety.
5. Create a bathroom oasis
Transform your bathroom into a relaxing oasis by incorporating some plants into your décor. Not only will they add a touch of nature to your space, but they can also help to purify the air and create a spa-like atmosphere. Depending on the style of your bathroom, it may be best suited to ‘tropical’ style plants like ferns, or it may be better suited to succulents like cacti. If you decide to go for the tropical option, why not go really wild and put the plants right above the shower, so it’ll feel like you’re showering in the rainforest?
6. Get creative with containers
There’s no need to be limited to traditional pots when choosing how to home your plants. Anything that can hold soil and can have drainage holes made is fair game! What about buckets, crockery, coffee mugs, perhaps even paint tins (wash them out first!) if you’re aiming for a rustic warehouse look?
7. Group plants on a table
If you have a coffee table, side table or even a dining table, then grouping plants together is a great way to add some life to your space. Not only does it create a visual impact, but it’s also a great way to show off your plants. You could create a stunning centrepiece by having a large low-profile pot with multiple plants, or you could use multiple smaller pots arranged next to each other. Or if you’re planning on putting the plants on a coffee table, why not use old coffee mugs and/or coffee pots? If you don’t have any of those, then open up food cans (cleaned, obviously!) can create a lovely rustic display.
