Simon says is a game that has been around for decades. It’s one of the simplest games to play with friends and family, but it can also be challenging!
The rules of this game are simple: the player who is “it” says “Simon says” before giving any instructions.
If you follow those instructions, then you don’t have to do anything else. But if you don’t obey the command, then you either take two steps back or sit down on the ground as punishment!
In this blog post, we will discuss how to play different versions of Simón Says and what they’re best for! Read on for more information about these.
What Is Simon Says?
Simon says is a game that was created in the 1800s. It’s one of the simplest games to play with friends and family, but it can also be challenging!
The originator of this game is unknown, but the game has a perception of being American and nineteenth century in origin. Old school British slang for “I” or “me”, it is pronounced as “se’mon” with a long first [e] sound, each letter in succession voiced separately, like ‘Ss Eee Mmm Ooo Nn’.
Simon Says is an old American antecedent to this European form, called the Grandmother Game (in French: le jeu de la grand-mère; probably because such games can only be transmitted from mother to daughter).
Simon’s popularity was popularized by a challenge on @midnight with Chris Hardwick which aired back in 2013. Our hope is that player participation continues to grow and that you will be a part of making this game live on for generations!

Another variation is to tap your left foot before giving any instructions. If you follow those instructions, then you don’t have to do anything else. But if you don’t obey the command, then you either take two steps back or sit down on the ground as punishment!
A final variation that can be played with friends and family involves tapping your right elbow before giving any instructions. If you follow those instructions, then you don’t have to do anything else. But if you don’t obey the command, then you either take two steps back or sit down on the ground as punishment!
Game Play
- The person in charge of the commands (Simon) says one color, then one action while following the previous command
- For example, if Simon said “red,” you would have to jump up and down; if he then said “blue,” you would have to sit on the floor with your legs crossed
- You’re not allowed to repeat colors or actions until Simon says ‘repeat’ at which point you must do what he commanded previously
- If someone messes up an action they are eliminated from the game – this continues until there is only one player left standing!
